Free trading journal

Write down every trade. The journal does the maths.

Add each trade: the price you bought and sold at, your stop loss, and why you took it. The journal then shows which trades make you money, and which habits cost you money.

Free to use. Sign up with an email address. The calculators and learning pages need no account.

A picture with sample numbers: one trade, and the numbers it adds to.

What is R?

R is the money you would lose if your stop loss is hit. The journal measures every trade in R.

  1. You buy 10 shares at ₹100.

You also decide where to get out if the trade goes wrong.

  2. You set your stop loss at ₹95.

If the price falls to ₹95, you lose ₹5 on each share. That is ₹50 in all. This ₹50 is your risk. We call it 1R.

  3. You sell at ₹110 and make ₹100.

₹100 is two times your risk of ₹50. So this trade is +2R.

The same trade, four endings

Every result is your profit or loss, divided by your 1R of ₹50.

  • You sell at ₹110+₹100. You made two times your risk. +2R
  • You sell at ₹102.50+₹25. You made half your risk. +0.5R
  • The stop loss is hit at ₹95−₹50. You lost what you planned to lose. −1R
  • You sell at ₹92.50, below your stop−₹75. You lost more than you planned. −1.5R

Why measure in R?

  • You can compare a small trade with a big one.
  • You can see if your wins are bigger than your losses.
  • You can see each time you lost more than you planned.

No stop loss? Then the trade has no R. The journal still shows its profit or loss in rupees. Selling short works the same way, with the stop loss above your price.

What you write down

The trade itself, and the part most people forget: why you took it and how you felt.

  • The trade

Buy or sell, the stock or option, and your setup, such as Breakout or Pullback.

  • Prices and quantity

Each buy and each sell, with its price, quantity, date and time. Bought in two parts? Add both, and the journal finds your average price.

  • Your plan

Your stop loss and your target. The journal uses them to work out R.

  • Chart pictures

Up to six screenshots on each trade, so you can see the setup again later.

  • Your thinking

Why you took the trade, how you felt, any mistake you made, and what you learnt.

  • Discipline

Did you follow your plan and your stop loss? Give the trade a score from 1 to 10.
